Annual Report

Throughout the 2021-2022 fiscal year, we have started to settle in to the new normal of the pandemic, and we’ve stepped up to serve our community through innovative programming and exhibitions as we collectively adjust to the changing times. The Gallery has had to remain flexible through mandated closures and community outbreaks while leaning into our successes and strengths. Our Connected North virtual programming has continued to expand, reaching an all-time high while connecting communities in the North to our incredible collection. We saw the triumphant return of Gallery Ball, which was an amazing success after facing delays. Another headliner event was the return of Art in Bloom, something that was so timely and needed in our community, championed by the Associates of the WAG. We’ve opened amazing exhibitions, including Kwaata-nihtaawakihk: A Hard Birth, Naadohbii: To Draw Water, and a major retrospective of the late Cliff Eyland’s work in Cliff Eyland: Library of Babel – A Retrospective.

2021-2022 was the first year of exhibition, programming, and events in Qaumajuq – and we could not be more pleased with the response from our community and beyond. Qaumajuq has been featured internationally, even putting Winnipeg on the map in Time Magazine’s 2021 list of World’s Greatest Places. We’ve extended Qaumajuq’s inaugural show INUA, giving visitors to the gallery more time with the incredible art on display in this historic show.

The Board, Foundation, Associates, membership, volunteers, and staff all came together to make Qaumajuq’s first year a brilliant success! This is a step forward in the spirit of reconciliation, and we could not have done it without you.

As a part of our commitment to implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, we continue to move towards making the gallery a safe and welcoming space for Indigenous people. Over the last year, we’ve established an Anti-Racism Committee, commissioned the Equity Action Plan report to provide recommendations to address systemic oppression within our institution, and hosted the inaugural Winnipeg Indigenous Triennial, which established a foundation for large-scale Indigenous exhibitions every three years. There are many other initiatives, too many to list here, all undertaken with the guidance and leadership of Indigenous Nations.

Thank you all for your ongoing support of WAG-Qaumajuq. We are so grateful for the community of supporters who helped get us here. The stories below are highlights from the 2021-22 fiscal year. I hope you enjoy reflecting on these key moments in our Gallery’s history. Truly, none of this would be possible without you, our supporters and friends.
