50 years in glass @ ShopWAG

ShopWAG is celebrating the 50-year career of local glass artist Ione Thorkelsson, with a series release of blown glass works from the artist’s personal collection.

This special series will feature five artwork releases over the course of the year, available for purchase in-store only. Shoppers can expect a wide variety of works from one of Canada’s most recognized glass artists, with artworks dating back to the 1970s.

The first release includes many curiosities and never-repeated experiments conducted back when Thorkelsson was just discovering the fabulous world of glass. The earliest pieces were made from essentially unblowable, re-melted scrap window glass, reformed to make gorgeous vessels.

The second release of blown glass pieces will feature artworks from 1975-1977 as well as perfume bottles created between 1985-1992. Originating from her second studio in Graysville in 1975, the second release of artworks showcases her experiments with glass batching and creating glass from scratch.

Further releases of Thorkelsson’s work will include later collections of artwork that focus on colour, metallics, and opaque glass.

Join us on Thursday, April 20, from 5 to 8pm for the launch of this exciting retrospective art sale, with a cash bar and light snacks. The artist will be in attendance for the evening.

Over 150 works will become available for sale over the span of the next year. Don’t miss this opportunity to shop pieces from one of the longest running glass studios in Canada.

I can’t wait to see this show. Ione has been a friend since the 1960’s when we were both in architecture school and then, the Roseisle days as neighbours.
This show will be fabulous!
