Through 2012 and 2013 Canada’s oldest civic art gallery celebrates its first one hundred years. The WAG Century is an anniversary exhibition that explores the complex and exciting history of the Winnipeg Art Gallery from 1912 to the present day.

Winnipeg Now is a pulse-taking exhibition in which equal weight falls on both words in the show’s title: it is a measure of what art-making looks like in this city in 2012. Whether the artists are living here or away, a spirit of risk-taking and invention permeates the work.

From its establishment in 1912 as the first civic art gallery in Canada to its role a century later as one of the leading visual arts institutions in the country, the history of the Winnipeg Art Gallery is inextricably linked to the principle that the cause of art is the cause of the people.
