The Gallery began collecting photography and video art in a serious way in the 1980s. Today the Gallery’s collections number 1,500 photos and videos, including work by major international figures such as Andre Kertesz, Alexander Rodchenko, Edward Steichen, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Irvin Penn, Harold Edgerton, and Diane Arbus. In addition, WAG-Qaumajuq holds a strong collection of contemporary Canadian and American photography by artists like Ken Lum, Lynne, Cohen, Suzy Lake, Joan Jonas, Ian Wallace, Evergon, and Edward Burtynsky. WAG-Qaumajuq is also home to photographic and video work by nationally and internationally regarded Manitoba photographers including David McMillan, John Paskievich, Diana Thorneycroft, Larry Glawson, William Eakin, and Sarah Anne Johnson.
