Opening: Marc Chagall & Esther Warkov
Saturday, May 28, 2016 from 7pm to 10pm
Featuring Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Maestro Alexander Mickelthwate playing Debussy, and dance by Gearshifting Performance Works.
Pioneer of modernism Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was one of the 20th century’s most popular artists. Our latest NGC@WAG collaboration features Daphnis & Chloé, widely considered the crowning achievement of Chagall’s career as a printmaker.
Presented alongside these romantic, dreamlike scenes is Chagall & Winnipeg, telling the story of friendship between Chagall and former WAG Director Dr. Ferdinand Eckhardt through a series of letters, photographs, and works of art.
Esther Warkov’s stylized motifs reveal an influence of Jewish folk art and Winnipeg’s North End. One of Manitoba’s most distinctive artists, Warkov invites viewers to meander through the strangeness of her painted worlds.
