From September 2023 to April 2024, an exhibition in partnership with RBC Emerging Artists and the Inuit Art Foundation featured work by 2021 Kenojuak Ashevak Memorial Award winner and WAG-Qaumajuq artist-in-residence Tarralik Duffy, exploring contemporary Inuit culture and experience through a pop art lens. This winter, Qaumajuq was recognized as Best in Heritage out of six continents as a ground-breaking project that highlights innovation and the transformative power of art and culture. The Gallery also received the inaugural Tourism Award for Business Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for our efforts to create a welcoming space for everyone. Presented by BMO Financial Group, Gallery Ball 2023 on October 14 raised close to $300,000 for youth outreach and education programs at WAG-Qaumajuq. Proceeds from the event are enabling 30,000 children in the community to experience more through art. Thank you to all who contributed! The ninth annual CRAFTED Show + Sale, presented by Sussex Realty, took place in November 2023 and saw over $400,000 go directly to local and northern artists. The sale featured over 100 makers from 38 communities. Plus, the sale of our kit from Masagana Flower Farm and Studio led to $2,000 donated to Sunshine House. To kick off the CRAFTED Show + Sale weekend, we hosted the second annual Fashion Show that showcased over 200 looks from fashion designers based in Manitoba, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Nunavik, and Nunatsiavut.

Over the last few months, allegations claiming former Gallery Director Ferdinand Eckhardt was affiliated with the Nazi party have been in the news. Based on our own independent investigation, WAG-Qaumajuq has started the process of removing Eckhardt’s name from the main entrance hall, the website, and all other Gallery materials. Learn more

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Associates of the WAG, the Gallery created special labels for over 120 works on view that have been donated by the Associates. A partnership with the Government of Nunavut (GN) Department of Culture and Heritage and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc brought artists Aghalingiak Okokannoak (Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay), Dayle Kubliuitok (Iqaluit), and Eva Qirniq Noah (Qamani’tuaq/Baker Lake) to the Gallery to research the WAG-Qaumajuq and GN collections, produce work, and participate in community programming. In honour of the famed ceramicist’s legacy, limited release sales from Robert Archambeau’s personal collection are available at ShopWAG for purchase with proceeds supporting the Gallery. So far the series has been a resounding success, with a portion of the funds going towards a book covering Archambeau’s career. Learn more

WAG-Qaumajuq was proud to present a new exhibition featuring the work of contemporary artist Ningiukulu Teevee at Canada House in London, England, which just closed May 25. Organized in partnership with the High Commission of Canada in the UK, Ningiukulu Teevee: Stories from Kinngait includes 26 artworks from the celebrated Inuk artist from Presenting Sponsor Cholakis Dental Group’s “Inuit Art in Practice” collection. This spring, the Gallery offered 14 paintings for auction at Cowley Abbott that provided a snapshot of Canadian art history spanning eight decades — from the early 1900s through the 1970s. On May 30, 2024, the paintings exceeded expectations, netting $765,000. The monies raised go towards the Gallery’s legacy fund at The Winnipeg Foundation to support the future acquisition of contemporary Canadian artworks. Learn more

At the end of May 2024, Riopelle: Crossroads in Time officially opened at WAG-Qaumajuq. Organized by the National Gallery of Canada and presented in Winnipeg by Power Corporation of Canada, partners from across the country came together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the trailblazing Canadian artist and this spectacular show on view at the Gallery until September 8, 2024.
