WAG Extends Dalí Exhibits to February 22

Winnipeg, Manitoba, January 20, 2015: The Winnipeg Art Gallery is pleased to announce the holdover of Dalí Up Close and Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery to February 22, 2015. Originally scheduled to close on January 31 at this year’s Art & Soul event, The Lucid Dream, the two exhibitions have been extended due to popular demand.

“Manitoba’s response to Dalí has been terrific!” says Dr. Stephen Borys, WAG Director & CEO. “We’re thrilled to see the record crowds for the first major exhibition of Salvador Dalí in the province, alongside one of Canada’s finest European and British collections. For that reason we wanted to offer Winnipeggers and Manitobans a few more weeks to see and enjoy this blockbuster exhibition package.”

The first 24 hours of Dalí and Beaverbrook saw attendance of over 4,000 people, setting a new record for the opening day of a WAG exhibition. The shows have since attracted over 30,000 visitors. Close to 4,000 school children have explored the stories behind the art with over 120 school tours going through the galleries.

From membership to social media, WAG communities have continued to grow over the exhibition run. The WAG’s Twitter account reached 24,500 followers thanks in part to the steady media stream with the current shows. Related programs, including free guided tours and talks, have filled up fast, and new tour dates are being added: Sunday, February 1 and 15 at 1pm and 2pm. New dates have also been organized for the sold out Flavours of Art, the WAG’s dinner-and-tour program with TABLE (formerly Storm Bistro): January 23 (sold out) and a special Valentine’s Day edition on February 14. Flavours of Art tickets can be purchased online at wag.ca or by calling 204.789.1290.

The Beaverbrook show is an exceptional collection of paintings by the likes of Gainsborough, Turner, Carr, and Freud. A highlight is Dalí’s monumental Santiago El Grande, which inspired parallel show Dalí Up Close, featuring major paintings, watercolours, drawings, jewellery, and sculpture by surreal master Dalí, for the first time in Winnipeg. Admission to the shows includes a free audio tour with 35 stops in French and English.

Gallery Hours: Sunday-Saturday (11am-5pm), Friday (11am-9pm), closed Mondays. The WAG will be open Monday, February 16 (11am-5pm) for Louis Riel Day.

Tickets can be purchased online at dali.exhibits.wag.ca or at the WAG’s front desk. For the latest updates, follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
