WAG Art Eats Offers Dinner at Storm Bistro and a Curator’s Exhibition Tour

Winnipeg, MB, March 8, 2012: If you are looking for a change from another ho-hum dinner out, consider the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Art Eats on Friday, March 22. The evening begins with a dinner at Storm Bistro on the WAG’s penthouse level. Inspired by the exhibition Creation & Transformation: Defining Moments in Inuit Art, the chefs at Storm have created an Arctic-inspired dinner based on salmon and wild rice—even the dessert has a salty pop of salmon roe!

Dinner is followed by a tour of the exhibition led by Dr. Darlene Coward Wight, Curator of Inuit Art, and one of the world’s experts on Inuit art. It takes place from 6 to 9pm on Friday, March 22. Tickets are $45 for WAG members and $50 for non-members. They are available at wag.ca, by calling 204.789.1290, or emailing education@wag.ca.

“The Winnipeg Art Gallery has been collecting Inuit art since 1957,” says Wight, “and we are now home to the largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art in the world. This exhibition contains 115 works—sculpture, prints, drawings, and textile art—from all areas of the Arctic. It explores the growth of Inuit art since 1949, the artistic development, the influential artists and artistic advisors, the new media explored—all the things that have shaped and transformed the art over six decades.”

Art Eats offers a fixed menu which is posted in advance at wag.ca. Anyone who has dietary issues or restrictions should contact Storm Bistro in advance at 204.948.0085.

Celebrating its centenary in 2012-13, the Winnipeg Art Gallery is Canada’s oldest civic art gallery and Manitoba’s leading visual arts institution. With a collection of over 24,000 objects spanning many centuries and cultures – including the world’s largest collection of contemporary Inuit art – the WAG is constantly moving between the historical and the contemporary in an effort to engage a growing public with the power of art in our lives.
