The Countdown Begins to 100 Masters Exhibition at the WAG

FOR RELEASE FEBRUARY 1, Winnipeg, MB:  Billboards and bus signs have been sprouting up around town that consist of just a wooden crate and an artist’s signature. What’s it all about? They are announcing 100 Masters: Only in Canada, an exhibition opening at the Winnipeg Art Gallery May 11 that will feature some of the biggest names in visual art—Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Matisse, Warhol, Picasso, and Monet, to name just a few.

The WAG’s 100-day countdown to the exhibition begins today at Each day the website will reveal a new artwork that will be appearing in 100 Masters: Only in Canada. The works have come from the collections of 28 galleries across Canada—stunning treasures of Canadian, European, and American art that span five centuries—that these institutions count among their most prized works. Each week a video on will focus on one of these works, giving visitors an insider’s view on what they will be seeing when the exhibition opens.

“We chose to mark our centenary by organizing an exhibition that celebrates what is truly great about Canada and its cultural holdings,” says WAG Executive Dr. Director Stephen Borys who curated the exhibition. “You could call it a love letter to our sister institutions, a thank-you to them for their support over the last century.”

On Borys’s Travel-blog on, he will be talking about his travels over the past year and a half as he criss-crossed  the country (and Minneapolis), talking to other gallery directors, exploring their collections, and choosing the perfect works for 100 Masters: Only in Canada.
