Summer Art Camp

(Adult) Week Long Workshop En Plein Air

Summer is a great time to take in the fresh air and sunshine and get outdoors to draw and paint! Observe how light affects colour and learn colour theory, composition, drawing and  painting techniques while exploring the styles of French Modernist painters Henri Matisse, Claude Monet , Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Jean-François Millet. Students will meet in the studio on the first day, and go to other locations during the course of the week.

(Adult) Weeklong Workshop in Drawing Basics

These workshops run five full days (Mon to Fri). Each course consists of 25 hours (5 hours each day) of class time. You’ll immerse yourself in your creative activities for a full week in a stimulating environment. Supply lists will be forwarded to registrants in advance of the workshops (classes run from 10am to 4pm with a 1 hour lunch break). Students make their own lunch arrangements. Storm Restaurant is conveniently located in the Gallery’s penthouse.

Drawing Basics

By focusing on colour while using media such as oil pastels, chalk pastels, art sticks and other materials, you will develop your ability to depict multiple aspects of nature. Individual interpretations of the subject matter is encouraged. Weather permitting, we will work outside as much as possible!

Child and teen classes are structured to accommodate the abilities of different age levels. These fun-filled classes develop skills in various media, sparkling creativity and imagination. Develop drawing skills as you create your own fashion designs. Create one-of-a-kind jewellery, handbags, or sneakers. Re-work clothes with DIY flare, using fabric paint, printmaking, hand-sewn embellishments, or creative re-structuring. This course may require the students to provide their own sneakers and cast-off clothing to experiment with as they explore the world of fashion art.

Love reading comics and drawing? This graphic novel class allows students to explore the art of storytelling through their drawings. Students will develop their unique skills in sketching, storyboarding, creating characters and the worlds they live in, and put their ideas on paper. Michel Saint Hilaire instructs the art of acrylic painting in French and English. Speakers of either or both languages are welcome, no matter what your level of experience. Some time will be spent sharpening your drawing skills in preparation for painting. Learn colour theory, shading, ways to describe space, use of light, composition, and the particularities of painting with acrylics. You will work from still life and models.

Traditional Drawing

Learn the fundamentals of drawing and build skills that transfer to other art practices. Academic drawing remains an incredibly valuable method for developing dexterity and sensitivity with materials such as pencil and charcoal. The media and subjects of this class are basic, but its highly disciplined approach will reward you with a depth of skill that is acquired through time and practice.
