This exhibition is redemptive and uplifting, reminding each one of us how beautiful life is, and what a gift.

Teva Harrison was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 37. In-Between Days features 40 ink on paper drawings from her inspiring graphic memoir, which documents through comic illustration what it means to live with the disease.

Harrison didn’t set out to write a book or be the subject of an exhibition. Upon her diagnosis, she turned to her sketch pad drawing her thoughts, feelings, and frustrations. From the sketches, the writer and painter started creating drawings chronicling her day-to-day life as a cancer patient. Fellow patients noticed her work and how they could help other people affected by serious diseases, and encouraged her to post her creations online. Weeks later the comics were running on The Walrus magazine website and a book publisher was contacting her.

In-Between Days: A Memoir about Living with Cancer won the Kobo Emerging Writer Prize for Non-Fiction and was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction and the Joe Shuster Award for Cartoonist/Auteur. This exhibition at the WAG is the first time Harrison’s illustrations are being showcased in an art gallery.
