The Red Amautiit Project was a three-year endeavour that brought together Inuit families from the Kivalliq, Nunatsiavut, and Manitoba regions to sew commemorative amautiit for their Inuit Missing and Murdered Women and Girls.
The Amautiit is the Inuit traditional parka worn by women to carry their babies. The families decided their amautiit would be sewn with red materials – red for the colour of life – that commemorates the lives of their Inuit women and girls who were taken from their families and communities.
These are our stories and experiences of Inuit MMIWG. This is our Inuit “Red Dress”.
Presented by Manitoba Inuit Association, Ikayuqtiit Inc., and WAG-Qaumajuq, this show features over 25 participants and seamstresses.
