Mary Yuusipik Singaqti’s Back River Memories

“I want the younger generation to know about me, how we used to live and how life was before.”
—Mary Yuusipik Singaqti

Mary Yuusipik Singaqti (1936-2017) was born in a remote region north of Baker Lake, Nunavut. The artist belonged to the last generation of Inuit to experience the inland nomadic way of life that centred on fishing and hunting caribou. She was encouraged by her mother, famed artist Jessie Oonark, to create fabric collage wall hangings. Yuusipik became known for her textile work that skilfully depicts traditions and stories. The WAG is proud to present the first retrospective of her work in Mary Yuusipik Singaqti: Back River Memories. Learn about Inuit life on the land through this exhibition that features 26 captivating drawings recently purchased by the WAG, as well as striking wall hangings and sculptures.
