This class is designed for individuals who have a basic drawing and painting skill level and wish to learn the art of figurative painting using water-soluble oil paints.
You will work from a model and photographs and learn about proportion, foreshortening, and other fundamental techniques for depicting the human form. Additionally, colour theory, shading, ways to describe space, use of light, composition, and the particularities of painting with water-soluble oils will also be explored.

Disclaimer: Nude Models (both male and female) and costumed models will be used on occasion.

In order to help ensure the comfort and safety of all visitors and staff, the WAG has a mandatory face covering policy in place. We ask that all guests aged 5 and older wear a mask, scarf, or bandana that covers the nose and mouth while in public spaces at the Gallery.

As per our reopening protocols, we encourage physical distancing, tables/chairs/supplies are sanitized frequently, and all staff and patrons are asked to self-screen before coming.

Instructor

Laura Lewis

Laura Lewis is a queer visual artist originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, currently based in Winnipeg. Lewis graduated in 2018 with a combined degree from NSCAD and the School of Art, University of Manitoba BFA Honours program. Laura’s conceptual figurative painting practice explores philosophical questions concerning identity and sexuality. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and she has participated in artist residencies both nationally and internationally.

Laura is an active member of the local art community. She is the facilitator for MAWA’s critical Painting Perspectives Reading Group and is involved with several local artist run centres and galleries including Creative Manitoba, aceartinc., MAWA, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
