Enjoy a screening of Kanàtenhs: When the Pine Needles Fall (2022, 22 min.) by Katsi’tsakwas Ellen Gabriel followed by a conversation between Katsi’tsakwas, Niigaan Sinclair, and Sean Carleton.
As the writer, producer, director, and narrator, Katsi’tsakwas’ documentary Kanàtenhs: When the Pine Needles Fall focuses on the first day of a 78-day standoff between the Québec provincial police and the Kanien’kehá:ka community of Kanesatake in 1990. This documentary won the award for Best Canadian Short Film during the International First Peoples Festival in Montreal last year, and has screened at nearly 30 festivals around the world.
Katsi'tsakwas Ellen Gabriel
Katsi’tsakwas Ellen Gabriel is a Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) documentarian, visual artist, and Indigenous Land Defender. She was well-known to the public when she was chosen by the People of the Longhouse and her community of Kanehsatà:ke to be their spokesperson during the 1990 “Oka” Crisis; to protect the Pines from the expansion of a 9 hole golf course in “Oka”. she has been a human rights activist since 1990 and continues this work today. Katsi’tsakwas holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University, majoring in Studio Art, and a Diploma from the New York Film Academy. Her filmmaking is inspired by a variety of topics, such as nature, other artists, and everyday life.
