WAG@Home Interact with Art

Derby Porcelain. Plate, c. 1813-1820. soft-paste porcelain, 3.1 x 22.2 cm. Collection of the Winnipeg Art Gallery; The Ruby Ashdown Collection of Decorative Art, 2009-219.

Interact with art in the WAG collection from the comfort of your home. With everything from historical to contemporary artwork, the WAG holds an extensive and rich collection for your endless inspiration! This week, we invite you to interact with a decorative art piece – the floral-painted Derby Porcelain plate. Explore the WAG’s Derby Porcelain collection and paint your own “porcelain” plate with inspiration from Winnipeg’s local florists!

Look: Did you know? This incredible piece of soft-paste pottery was created by a well-known flower painter from England, who began working on pottery when he was just 10 years old! What words would you use to describe the flowers painted on this plate? Can you identify the names of any of the flowers?

Imagine: Take a close look at the Derby Porcelain in the collection (some featured under “similar works”) How are they the same? How are they different? Imagine setting these plates on your own table and eating from them. What kind of food would you serve? Would you use these plates every day or only for certain occasions? Look at the Derby dishes painted with flowers. If you could choose one floral plate to use on a very special occasion, which one would you choose? Why? Some plates are so beautiful that we don’t use them at all – they are artworks that we hang on the wall!

Create: Around the house, find pictures or live flowers, or visit one of your favourite flower shops on social media and get inspired to create your very own floral design. Paint your special arrangement of flowers on a plain white paper plate or cut out a circle of plain paper and make your own!

Some of our favourite floral shops on social media are: @academyflorist; @mcdairmidflowers; @oakandlily; @thefloralfixx; @beyond_flowers; @broadwayflorists; The Camel Studio; Fresh Cut Downtown; Stonehouse Creative; In Full Bloom; @petalswest, and many more!

Share with us! Take a picture of your artwork and email it to communications@wag.ca to be featured on the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s social media!

Thank you for leaving the names of florists in WPG as I used to live there and sometimes require a florist.
