My Daily Art

Frank H. Johnston. Serenity, Lake of the Woods, 1922. oil on canvas, 102.3 x 128.4 cm. Collection of the Winnipeg Art Gallery. L-102.

The title of this 1922 painting by Frank Johnston – Serenity, Lake of the Woods – says so much and offers so much about the transformative power of nature.

Johnston, a member of Canada’s Group of Seven, captures the geographical expanse of the Lake of the Woods in Ontario and the intensity of the region’s long-lasting summer light. The vast sky and horizon line set above the shimmering water embody a new definition of serenity.

As a teacher, principal, and practicing artist in Winnipeg, Johnston’s first solo exhibition was organized by the WAG in 1922.

While the WAG is temporarily closed, your collection is still here for you. Stay connected with the art through daily posts from our Director & CEO, Dr. Stephen Borys.

This is a series of daily posts that will continue until the Gallery reopens. Follow along on InstagramFacebook, and Twitter, or visit our stories section.
