Curator Jocelyn Piirainen on ᐃ

Joi Arcand. ᓂᓄᐦᑌ ᓀᐦᐃᔭᐘᐣ (ninohtē-nēhiyawān). Neon. Collection of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, 2018-82.1 and 2.

This WAG exhibition, ᐃ is a symbol in both Inuktitut and Anishininiwak syllabics translated as ‘I’ to embody self-determination and solidarity in collective reclamation.

The connection between Inuit and Anishininiwak cultures stems beyond language and syllabic. The clay and stone sculptures in ᐃ highlight influences of each cultures’ established practice and methods in material and form. In this exhibition, you’ll see the relationships in history and art history, as well as the impact on collective and individual creative endeavours.

I am looking forward to getting up close to these beautiful pieces and see what stories they hold within. It is the stories that connects us and as we have learned through these last few months…connecting with each other – across cultures, past & present, the history art brings – is so important. Thank you WAG for keeping us connected.

Winnipeg Art Gallery says:

Thank you for the kind words and support, Rosemary! We hope to welcome you back soon!
