RUTH BONNEVILLE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESSInsider: Portraits of Stephen Borys (CEO of the WAG) for an Insider’s ad taken in Main Hall.SEPT 20, 2017

In with the new as we give you our first-ever digital myWAG magazine.

This summer is an exciting season at WAG-Qaumajuq, engaging so many people in the community through art, art-making, and cultural dialogue – and it’s only possible because of supporters like you.

I’m pleased to send you this snapshot of the past season and what you have to look forward to now and in the months ahead. I hope you get a lift as you read through, since that’s what you do for the community when you give to the Gallery. Even better, come visit so you can experience all that you make happen. These inspiring spaces are better with you here!

Riopelle: Crossroads in Time, a major retrospective of the iconic French-Canadian artist, is now open! Join us for special Riopelle events throughout the summer. As well, two prominent local contemporary female artists come into the spotlight this July (Lita Fontaine) and October (Dominique Rey).

One of the few female carvers from Kinngait, previously Cape Dorset, Nunavut to achieve international recognition, Omalluq Oshutsiaq switched to illustration in the last two years of her life after an occupational accident. The most significant collection of the artist’s drawings are sure to move you, featured on the top level of Qaumajuq in Giizhig or “sky, heaven, day” in Cree/Michif/Ojibway.

Meanwhile there is a new annual scholarship at WAG Studio for young artists, a new tour on reconciliation through art, and a restoration of a delightful work that hasn’t come out to play for decades. Ongoing shows include gems from the permanent collection, and a largest-ever exhibition of Inuit art, live summer concerts on the rooftop, art classes, and camps! It’s all happening here at your gallery. It’s all happening thanks to you!

As always, please let us know how we’re doing, what more you’d like to see and if there’s anything else we can do to be exactly what you think a gallery should be.

In the meantime, lots of love from WAG-Qaumajuq, we are so grateful for you!
