Celebrating Artistic Legacy: Elaine Margolis Scholarship

We are delighted to announce that Sara Castaneda is the inaugural recipient of the Elaine Margolis Scholarship.

This scholarship, established by the family of Elaine Margolis in honour of a special birthday, is a testament to her lifelong dedication to the arts. This includes decades of dedicated service to the WAG as a member of the WAG Associates.

Elaine is a stalwart champion of the arts, a passion that ignited when she herself took art classes at the WAG at the age of 13. As a student at William Whyte School, Elaine was selected, along with her best friend, to participate in Saturday Morning Art Classes held in the illustrious Civic Auditorium where the WAG was then located. Under the guidance of inspiring instructors, Elaine’s talent flourished, laying the foundation for her lifelong love of art.

Throughout her artistic journey, Elaine’s unwavering support has been mirrored by her dear mother, Sarah, who meticulously preserved every masterpiece her daughter created. Elaine’s childhood portfolio, lovingly safeguarded by her mother, remains a cherished treasure in her home, a testament to the enduring power of creativity. Her advise to Sara is to keep all of her creations!

The prize was awarded to Sara with both the Castaneda and Margolis families present. The scholarship covers two WAG Studio classes over one year, an encouraging push towards what is already a bright future.

“The classes at the WAG and the support from the teachers there have been incredibly helpful,” says Sara. “I had the opportunity to learn and explore various techniques and art mediums, helping me to identify my artistic preferences and improve my skills. Also, these classes have helped me in the development of my creativity, which has always been a challenge for me.

Overall these classes were one of the things I looked forward to during the week.

As Sara embarks on this exciting chapter of her artistic journey, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes, as well as sincere thanks to Elaine for her longstanding support of the Gallery, and her family for this generous gift to benefit a young person every year. We have no doubt that Sara’s talent and dedication will continue to shine brightly, honouring the legacy of Elaine Margolis and inspiring future generations of young artists.
