Behind-the-Scenes with Vitaliy

Every year, a handful of artworks from the WAG-Qaumajuq collection are selected for conservation. The artwork may be new to the collection and require immediate attention in order to be presented at its best for the public, or it may have been in storage and picked for an exhibition, gone through inspection, and determined in need of some TLC before going on display.

The Gallery is lucky to have a talented team of experts in this area to carry out this work so central to our activities. One of WAG Conservator Vitaliy Yatsevych’s most recent projects is Kim Adams’ Earth Wagons, a miniature world constructed using toy train model parts. Earth Wagons took over 40 hours to complete, making it one of the most time consuming restorations over Vitaliy’s long tenure at the Gallery. Here he tells you why it was one of his favourites.

Vitaliy explains that in this case, the small details got detached over time, they were basically falling down. He had to identify them and put them in exactly the same place, so photo-documentation played an important role.

At some points I was losing sense of whether I was working or playing…I wouldn’t say it was the easiest project because some spots were not easy to reach…but it was definitely fun.
-Vitaliy Yatsevych, WAG Conservator

Your support as members and donors helps preserve and care for the 27,000 artworks housed at WAG-Qaumajuq so they can be enjoyed now and for future generations. Thank you for being a part of this legacy!

Earth Wagons is on display on the Mezzanine Level of the WAG until July 14, 2024.
