Rosalie Favell asserts her Metis identity by creating her own version of the famous movie The Wizard of Oz. The artist, representing the character Dorothy who has just returned from the land of Oz, is in her bedroom, lying in a bed covered by a Hudson’s Bay Company blanket. Her hero, Xena, Warrior Princess, watches over her from a picture at the head of the bed. Louis Riel looks in through the bedroom window, welcoming Favell back to the Metis community and reminding her that “home is where the heart is.” The title of Favell’s work is a direct reference to Riel’s famous statement, “My people will sleep for 100 years, and when they awake it will be the artists who give them back their spirit.”
