Annual Report

This year, we welcomed shows that expanded our vision, including the first retrospective and largest exhibition of Tim Gardner, an internationally recognized artist who got his start here in Winnipeg. The unforgettable touring exhibition, The Art of Faye HeavyShield made a stop in Winnipeg, which gathered the seminal works of a celebrated contemporary Indigenous artist.

Thanks to a partnership with the Inuit Art Foundation, we hosted the first ever group exhibition of the Kenojuak Ashevak Memorial Award shortlist artists, Anaanatta Unikkaangit: Our Mother’s Stories, and hosted the 2021 KAMA winner, Tarralik Duffy who also opened her solo show, Gasoline Rainbows. On September 22, we announced the recipient of the 2023 award: Ningiukulu Teevee, who will have a solo exhibition and residency here at the Gallery in 2025.

Last summer, we saw Grace Nickel’s beautiful exhibition, Inter Artes Et Naturam (Between Art and Nature), Nickel was the 2023 Governor General Saidye Bronfman Award winner. We also extended the second ever exhibition in Qaumajuq: Inuit Sanaugangit: Art Across Time, a show that explores the connective threads across time and the North.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we were proud to launch a new tour, Truth and Reconciliation Through Art, which takes visitors through the galleries and discusses what it means to move forward, and give us something to think about and advocate for reconciliation in our everyday lives. We were also excited to share a virtual tour of WAG-Qaumajuq on National Indigenous Peoples day which allows people from all over the world to explore the Gallery and learn about the Indigenous names and spaces that were gifted to us.

Thank you to our donors, members, and supporters for making all this and more possible at WAG-Qaumajuq. Thanks to your support, we welcomed nearly 200,000 visitors through our doors in 2023-24. Each visit has the potential to shift perspectives, move hearts and minds, or offer comfort and calm to our community.

2023-24 was a very busy year at the Gallery. This year the Gallery shared a wide variety of exhibitions and programming that spanned cultures and mediums, including the major retrospective Tim Gardner: The Full Story, curated by Dr. Stephen Borys, Director and CEO.

In 2023, we celebrated the milestone 75th anniversary of the Associates. On behalf of the WAG-Qaumajuq Board, I’d like to offer my sincere thanks to this venerable volunteer group for their many years of incredible support to the Gallery and the community.

I would like to thank WAG-Qaumajuq staff and leadership for making this fiscal year so remarkable. Their commitment to the success of the Gallery, to delivering exceptional exhibitions and programs and to creating partnerships with communities across the province and country is truly inspiring. I feel that WAG-Qaumajuq has assembled the right people in the right places to tackle many of the challenges arts organizations and non-profits are facing this year and that the expertise and commitment of the staff and leadership will lead us through.

I have had the privilege of working with an outstanding Board of Governors who bring dedication, intelligence, and innovation to every decision and conversation. Their support during my first year as Chair has meant so much to me.

Equity remains a core piece of our 2023-2028 Strategic Plan, and we continue to incorporate equity and care for our community into everything we do, seeking to care for both individuals and the collective community. I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to collaborate with Director & CEO, Dr. Stephen Borys. Under his direction, the Gallery has become a national leader in equity, diversity, and inclusion. Many galleries and museums throughout North America look to WAG-Qaumajuq as an example of what is possible.

This year, we completed four training days led by Taajuu Consulting. These were mandatory training sessions for staff and leadership that included education about 2SLGBTQIA+ knowledges, rematriation, addressing wrongs within a museum context, engaging in active work around anti-oppression frameworks, and deconstructing colonial power structures.

Our ongoing Anti-Racism Employee Resource Group continues to meet monthly for staff, and the Leadership team has been conducting mandatory Anti-Racism meetings for over a year now to interrogate the ways that white supremacy is manifesting in the ways we work.

We are currently developing a plan to address accessibility issues across the organization in accordance with the Accessibility for Manitobans Act, which will reduce barriers related to accessing information provided in print, in-person, on our websites, and in other formats.

We continue to welcome new faces to the Gallery after changing the way we hire to explicitly open pathways for Indigenous and Racialized people by valuing experience as highly as academic achievement. We are working to ensure that there are stronger opportunities for Indigenous and Racialized employees to grow and thrive within the organization.
