U of M Jazz Camp Faculty Heats Up WAG’s Jazz on the Rooftop

Steve Kirby’s jazz career spans over 25 years of performance collaboration with many of the finest artists in the field, both North America and abroad, including jazz greats Wynton Marsalis, Slide Hampton, and Lester Bowie, to name just a few, as well as opera diva Kathleen Battle. Since coming to Winnipeg Kirby has spearheaded the creation of the weekly jazz institution, the “Monday Night Hang” where students, faculty, seasoned pros, and visiting artists can hone their skills and exchange ideas in a live performance setting. Kirby also created the monthly dig! magazine which promotes all city and provincial jazz events. He is also Artistic Director of the Izzy Asper Jazz Performances, advisor to the Jazz Winnipeg Festival, director of the U of M Jazz Camp, and clinician for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Band Directors Association.

Saxophonist, composer, and bandleader, Jimmy Greene has emerged as a positive young presence in the creative music world whose several recordings have met with much critical acclaim. Tony Hall of Jazzwise Magazine calls him “…without doubt one of the most striking young tenors of recent years.” Greene has won many awards for his compositions, and has recorded with Harry Connick, Jr. Horace Silver, and Avishai Cohen, among others. His own bands have performed in Russia, Brazil, and Uruguay.

George Colligan, New York-based pianist, organist, drummer, trumpeter, teacher, and bandleader, is one of the most compelling and original jazz artists of his generation. He is an award-winning composer with 17 recordings full of his intelligent writing and impressive technique. His musical style incorporates everything from show tunes to funk, from free improvisation to 20th century classical music, and his performances include dazzling technique as well as mature restraint. He was formerly on the faculty of the Julliard School.
