Ron Paley Kicks Off WAG’s Jazz on the Rooftop Concert Series

The Ron Paley Big Band opens the WAG’s 32nd season of Jazz on the Rooftop on Thursday, July 8.

Pianist, electric bassist, composer—Ron Paley got his training touring with the Buddy Rich and Woody Herman big bands, He returned to Winnipeg 34 years ago to form his own band and they've been a huge part of the Winnipeg music scene ever since. The Big Band has performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Groundswell, as well as recording several albums. They have toured with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s A Cinderella Story performing their jazz arrangements of songs by Rogers and Hart.
A versatile composer, Paley was commissioned in 2002 by the Royal Canadian College of Organists to create a work for choir and organ based on the text of Psalm 122. This was followed by a commission from the National Arts Centre to write a fanfare for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for the Royal visit. In 2007 the Winnipeg Singers commissioned him to write a choral work using the text of three Shakespearean sonnets.
