WAG and SIR Bring Antony and Cleopatra Amongst Olympus

Winnipeg, Manitoba, June 25, 2015: In collaboration with Shakespeare in the Ruins, the Winnipeg Art Gallery is pleased to present a special edition of Antony and Cleopatra that will move you through the WAG… literally. The classical tale is right at home at the WAG, running alongside the Gallery’s current blockbuster exhibition: Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin. Both matinée and evening performances are being offered on July 8 and 9, 2015.

Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra follows the relationship of Cleopatra and Mark Antony from the time of the Sicilian revolt to the final war of the Roman Republic. The story of mature love and imperial conquest is full of passion, jealousy, war, and poisonous death. This first-ever Shakespeare in the Ruins performance at the WAG brings the production to the contemporary stage by placing it against the backdrop of Manitoba’s fur trade.

“Love, war, death…Antony and Cleopatra has it all,” comments Rachel Baerg, WAG Head of Education. “And the timing couldn’t be better to present this classical tragedy during Olympus. Shakespeare in the Ruins’ production is incredibly creative and is sure to be a stunning adventure for our audiences!”

SIR’s full length version of Antony & Cleopatra wraps up at the Ruins this Saturday night. It has been applauded as “beautifully acted and directed,” “marvellous,” and “noble.” The special production at the WAG borrows from the original, but is an all-new 45-minute presentation featuring new music and a new cast of four actors who will lead you through the WAG in SIR’s signature promenade style.

Although the show takes place outside of the Olympus galleries, ticket purchasers will receive a stamp on their Olympus Passport, allowing them to collect more stamps to win prizes including admission to the exhibition.

On view all summer, Olympus is Manitoba’s first major exhibition of classical antiquities in over half a century. The exhibition brings visitors face to face with over 160 Greek and Roman treasures from one of the most important collections of classical antiquities in the world. Olympus also features exciting viewports built by the Manitoba LEGO® Users Group, unveiled to large crowds this past weekend.

Shakespeare in the Ruins, Inc. is an artist-driven theatre company dedicated to the production of plays, particularly the works of Shakespeare as well as the creation of new works. Using non-traditional casting and environmental staging, they work to develop and grow the theatre artists in Manitoba.
