WAG Director Stephen Borys Named Leader of the Year

Winnipeg, Manitoba, June 5, 2015: On June 2, Dr. Stephen Borys, Winnipeg Art Gallery Director & CEO, was announced the 2015 Leader of the Year at the annual Winnipeg Tourism Awards of Distinction, hosted by Tourism Winnipeg.

Tourism Winnipeg’s Leader of the Year award honours a person who demonstrates leadership and motivation for a team to work together to achieve beyond their capabilities through inspiration, energy, and intelligence, while contributing to growing Winnipeg’s tourism industry.

“Is it an honour to receive the Winnipeg Tourism Leader of the Year Award,” states Dr. Borys. “Winnipeg is an exciting place to be, and I am proud to steer the Winnipeg Art Gallery as part of this thriving destination for tourists. Whether it’s treasures from ancient Greece and Rome, work by internationally renowned contemporary artists like Ron Mueck, or the WAG’s celebrated collection of Inuit art, we strive to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds through art and culture. I thank Tourism Winnipeg and award sponsor Red River College, as well as WAG staff and volunteers for their tireless support.”

Established in 2012, the Winnipeg Tourism Awards of Distinction allow Winnipeg’s tourism industry to recognize those people, places, organizations, and events that have gone above and beyond to offer a superior tourism experience to travellers in the city.

“Stephen Borys has consistently elevated Winnipeg’s profile through his thought leadership,” comments Marina James, President and CEO, Economic Development Winnipeg. “He understands the economic and social impact of his activities at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The deep, enriching experiences he has brought to Winnipeg has led the way in globally leveraging the value of this dynamic cultural institution in the community.”

The WAG was also one of three finalists for the 2015 Winnipeg Tourism Marketing Campaign of the Year Award for its Dalí Up Close and Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery exhibitions. The two blockbuster shows attracted over 40,000 visitors to the WAG.

“Since his arrival, Stephen Borys has brought outstanding exhibits to the Winnipeg Art Gallery,” says Chantal Sturk-Nadeau, Senior Vice President, Tourism Winnipeg. Through his determination and influence, he has helped increase visitation to Winnipeg by maintaining such a high standard of critically acclaimed exhibits for visitors to enjoy.”

In addition to serving as Director & CEO of the WAG, Dr. Borys is an adjunct professor at his alma mater, the University of Winnipeg, where he received his B.A. Honours degree. Born and raised in Winnipeg, he holds an Executive MBA, a PhD in Art History from McGill University, and an MA in art and architectural history from the University of Toronto. Dr. Borys is a graduate of the Getty’s Museum Leadership Institute and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. He is past president and board member of the Canadian Art Museum Directors Organization, and past board director of the Canadian Museums Association.
