Behold Olympus! Family Sunday at the WAG

Winnipeg, Manitoba, May 20, 2015: The Winnipeg Art Gallery invites families to experience ancient Greece and Rome at Behold Olympus! Family Sunday. This fun-filled afternoon takes place Sunday, May 24, from 1:30 to 4pm.

Inspired by the WAG’s monumental exhibition Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin, this edition of Family Sunday introduces visitors to the legendary gods, goddesses, and heroes of Greek mythology. Kids will embark on an odyssey through the galleries, and create their own Greco-Roman costume.

“The WAG’s Behold Olympus! Family Sunday will be a wonderful afternoon featuring one of the world’s most celebrated collections of ancient Greek and Roman art” comments Rachel Baerg, WAG Head of Education. “Combine this with our exciting line-up of hands-on activities for kids, and you’ve got an incredible opportunity to spend time with your loved ones that they won’t soon forget!”

Jewellery and laurel wreath-making workshops are scheduled, as well as a dance performance by en / trance, created specifically for the Olympus exhibition. Children are invited to dress up in tunics and participate in the dance. Visitors can even sign up to be a Roman citizen and receive an official citizenship certificate and photo!

Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin is a striking showcase of statuary, ceramics, and artefacts dating from the seventh century BC to the second century AD. As one of only two presentations in North American, Olympus is Manitoba’s first major display of classical antiquities in over half a century. The exhibition brings you face to face with the Olympian gods: Zeus, Poseidon, Apollo, Athena, Dionysos, and more. Ancient myths come to life in kid-friendly animated viewports and a free Odyssey Guide that tours young art lovers through the exhibition.

Admission to Family Sunday is $10 per family (up to two adults and four children under 18), and free for WAG members.

Behold Olympus! Family Sunday would not be possible without the sponsorship support of the McCain Foods Limited and Winnipeg Free Press.
