Dalí Opens to Record First Day Attendance at WAG

Winnipeg, MB, September 30, 2014: Winnipeggers want Dalí! The Winnipeg Art Gallery set an attendance record this past weekend when it opened two blockbuster exhibitions: Dalí Up Close and Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

The first 24 hours of the exhibitions saw over 4,000 people take in the two shows, setting a new record for the opening day of a WAG exhibition. With over 125 artworks spread over 10,000 square feet, visitors were offered an extraordinary array of international art, highlighted by the many works by Salvador Dalí.

“What an outstanding way to kick off two exceptional exhibitions,” comments Dr. Stephen Borys, WAG Director & CEO. “Visitors asked for more world class art and these opening numbers tell us that we’ve hit the mark once again. It was also rewarding to see such an amazing cross-section of the city at the WAG – people from every community, and every age and background, making the most of their art gallery.”

Winnipeggers took advantage of free admission offered for the opening on Saturday night in connection with Nuit Blanche, the city’s annual all-night celebration of the arts.

Dalí Up Close features paintings, watercolours, drawings, jewellery, and sculpture by Surrealist master Salvador Dalí,  as well as the celebrated photographs taken in collaboration with Philippe Halsman. Parallel show Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery is an uncompromising selection of paintings by Old Masters and members of the Group of Seven, including Dalí's masterpiece Santiago El Grande.

Both exhibitions run until January 25, 2015. Visit dali.exhibits.wag.ca to read the stories behind the art and find out about related events, programs, and contests.
