The Winnipeg Art Gallery Launches Special Weekend Programming for Children

WINNIPEG, MB. April 15, 2009: The final weekend of each month at The Winnipeg Art Gallery is now Young Weekends at the WAG, with art appreciation programs designed particularly for children.

Start with Art, held Saturday, April 25, will offer children and their parents a tour of the exhibition FitzGerald in Context. Youngsters will be encouraged to look at the art with fresh eyes, connecting what they see on the walls with events in their own lives. The 11:15am session is designed for children under 6 years of age, with those ages 6 to 12 attending the 1:30pm session.

StoryTime, PictureTime, held on Sunday, April 26, at 11:15am, features storytelling in an exhibition, followed by an engaging exhibition tour.

"The success of our Family Sunday program shows there is a need to incorporate Gallery activities for children on the weekends," says Youth Program Co-ordinator Aline Frechette. "Our Young Weekends at the WAG are an opportunity for parents and children to spend quality time together in a stimulating environment that feeds their imaginations."

"We feel that taking a fun approach to art is the best way to engage children," adds Youth Program Co-ordinator Kerri Twigg. "We want their experiences at the WAG to be memorable ones that will begin a life-time connection to art."

Start with Art and StoryTime, PictureTime are included with the cost of Gallery admission, plus an additional $2 per child. They are free for Gallery members.
