Ron Paley Big Band Leads off WAG’s Jazz on the Rooftop with Special Guests Mike Herriott and Brad Shigeta
The Ron Paley Big Band and special guests, trumpeter Mike Herriott and trombonist Brad Shigeta, get the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s 34th season of Jazz on the Rooftop off to a rousing start on Thursday, June 30. Doors open at 6pm, with the concert starting at 7:30. Tickets are $21 for WAG members and $25 for non-members, and allow free Gallery admission the day of the concert. There is also a cash bar and an optional barbeque by Storm Restaurant for $20.
Pianist, electric bassist, and composer, Ron Paley formed the Ron Paley Big Band in 1976 after playing with the big bands of Buddy Rich and Woody Herman, with whom he recorded two CD’s and played on a Frank Sinatra album. He has recorded two big band albums, one trio album, and is completing work on a big band musical.
Award winning Canadian trumpeter Mike Herriott has shared the stage with some of the world's finest artists including Michael Bublé, David Foster, Phil Nimmons, The Temptations, Johnny Mathis, The Moody Blues, Tommy Banks, Alex Cuba, Chucho Valdes, Kenny Wheeler, Rob McConnell, Ian McDougall, and the late Sir Yehudi Menuhin. He was also a featured soloist in concert with Allen Vizzutti, Jens Lindemann, Andea Tofanelli, and Doc Severinsen during the 2008 International Trumpet Guild Conference.
Brad Shigeta has spent several years as trombonist with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He has been involved on many national and international tours, recordings, and film scores with the Dave Holland Big Band, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and Vince Giordano and the Nighhawks. He was the solo trombonist for the film The Aviator.
The Ron Paley Big Band has performed in concert with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and played a concert of “new music” sponsored by Winnipeg’s new music concert organization “Groundswell”. In 2002 Ron was commissioned by the Royal Canadian College of Organists to compose a work for choir and organ based on the text of Psalm 122. This was followed by a commission from the National Arts Centre to write a fanfare for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for the Royal Visit. In 2004 the big band performed and toured with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, playing jazz arrangements of songs by Rogers and Hart for “A Cinderella Story”. In 2007 Ron was commissioned by the Winnipeg Singers to write a choral work using the text of 3 of Shakespeare's sonnets.
