Gallery Technician, Installations

Responsible to Head of Visitor & Museum Services for installation, handling, and physical movement of works of art for exhibitions, building display units, supports, pedestals and crates. Coordinate and carry out movement of artwork to and from local lenders.

Starting Salary: $40,422

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work in consultation with the head of museum services and others to prepare, construct and maintain exhibitions following conservation standards
  • Coordinate pick-up/delivery of artwork and handling/movement of artwork
  • Prepare exhibition spaces for exhibits, install, maintain, and dismantle exhibits including lighting, construct display devices, supports and crates following conservation standards
  • Pack, crate, load, and deliver outgoing shipments of works of art; pick up, unload, uncrate, and unpack incoming shipments, including repetitive lifting of heavy objects
  • Maintain tools in proper working order and maintain storage and work areas
  • Responsible to provide best efforts to ensure a positive visitor experience for all facets
  • Ongoing performance expectations relating to equity and anti-racism, including ongoing education, confrontation of personal biases, application of the anti-racism policy and equitable decision-making
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

  • University Degree in Art History/Fine Arts or a combination of education and experience
  • General knowledge of carpentry, electrical, mechanical and painting techniques, lighting, equipment and special materials used in exhibition installation
  • Creative problem solving skills; ability to identify and prioritize potential solutions;
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, shipping policies and procedures
  • Ability to lift heavy objects
  • Ability to work in cooperation with staff, artists, volunteers and the general public
  • Demonstrated experience with regard to art handling practices and the principles of preventative conservation in accordance with accepted musicological standards
